Non-commercial and commercial applications
of numerical meteorological forecasts

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Problem

Meteorological forecasts are relevant in many sectors of the economy (energy, especially renewable energy, agriculture, aviation, transport, etc.), as well as being used in activities that respond to the needs of society (air pollution forecasting, outdoor activity planning, etc.).
The project is concerned with the application of numerical predictions in practice, with a particular focus on the commercial (business) aspect.

Project objective

Identifying the needs of meteorological forecasts’ users and then commercialising these forecasts by:

  • creation of personalised products dedicated to specific user groups
  • commercial provision of archived and current forecasts
  • development of forecast access channels: website and mobile application
  • the development of forecasts with a view to their application in areas of utility to society and state security.

TASKS FOR THE SUPERCOMPUTER

01.

Modelowanie stanu atmosfery z zastosowaniem dedykowanego oprogramowania mające na celu wyznaczenie wysokorozdzielczych (siatka 4 km i 1,5 km) numerycznych prognoz meteorologicznych NWP (Numerical Weather Prediction).

02.

Running NWP models requires the use of HPC machines. Currently, forecasts are determined at 4 km and 1.5 km resolution for 70 elevation levels. It is impossible to achieve model scalability with reasonable computation time (forecast production) without the use of an HPC computer.

03.

3. Software used: United Kingdom Met Office’s Unified Model Earth System Modelling Software.

BENEFITS OF COOPERATION WITH ICM UW

The direct end product of the calculations are meteorological forecasts (dozens of meteorological parameters and derivatives) for the CEE region determined four times a day for the 4 km resolution grid and once a day for the 1.5 km resolution grid.

Indirect results are specialised products, e.g. wind speed forecasts processed for their application in energy
or appropriately aggregated rainfall forecasts for agriculture.

In addition, the work products will be a website and a mobile app, presenting the forecasts through meteograms, maps and icons.

UNIQUE USERS

EFFECTS

Forecasts published free of charge on meteo.pl are very popular, with almost 2 million unique visitors a month.

Forecasts are primarily used:

  • in energy (especially renewable energy) to forecast the amount of energy produced,
  • in agriculture and horticulture (in terms of frost, irrigation, spray planning, etc.),
  • in transport, especially aviation,
  • for the prediction of pollution propagation,
  • in tourism,
  • for planning outdoor activities,
  • for warning of dangerous phenomena, etc.
